Car cylinders tend to wear out just like other parts of your vehicle, and this is a very common problem. Frequent use of your ignition lock cylinder is only one of the reasons that can lead to a broken ignition cylinder.
Other reasons for malfunction of your ignition cylinder could be a faulty lock design, such as an old BMW or Honda ignition cylinder. Or a result of a vehicle theft attempt.

We are committed to being the best company out there, so that means doing things right from the get-go. We're here for you for the long haul. Now, we're going to share how we fix our ignition cylinders.
It is always important to make sure the blade of your key is not worn for any reason, as many ignition cylinder failures are often caused by this.
Our technician's first step would be cutting a tester blade and testing it on the damaged ignition cylinder. If the tester blade would work repairing the ignition cylinder might be unnecessary, and we could save our customers costly repairs.
It would be easy to assume that the issue was the original car key and all it takes is to cut a new transponder key to the car and program it to the car.
However, if the tester blade is rough on the ignition cylinder or does not work at all, it means that the ignition is indeed damaged. Usually it means that the inner parts which are called "wafers" are damaged or worn out and it leads us into the next step.
In order to evaluate the damage of our faulty ignition, we would need to remove it from the steering column. removing the ignition cylinder can be done in many different ways, it usually depends on the vehicle brand we are working on.
All ignition cylinders have a pin holder of some sort that holds them in place, this pin usually needs to be drilled out or pressed on to release the ignition cylinder out.
Getting access to the release pin can be achieved by drilling in the right points or by applying force and forcing the cylinder to ON position. In a case the pin holder has to be pressed ON, the ignition cylinder must be turned to ON position first.
After we take the ignition cylinder out, we will evaluate the damage and determine if it can be repaired or if it has to be replaced.
Depends on the damage evaluation and the vehicle’s brand and model we determine if the ignition cylinder can be repaired or if it should be replaced.
If the damage is severe, it would be best to get a new ignition. It's also advisable to get a new set of car keys, since many ignition failures are caused by worn out car keys.
Our team of technicians only use the best tools and parts for repairs, ensuring they last as long as possible. If we need to replace your ignition cylinder, we use only brand new and high quality ignitions.
We're confident in our ability and offer a worry-free 12-month warranty on our new ignition installation. If there's a problem with your ignition, we'll have you up and running in no time.
Ignition lock repair prices can cost as low as $150, likely to pay this amount if the ignition is still in good condition and new car keys would still operate on it.
The cost to fix a severely damaged ignition lock will vary between $250 and $350. It depends on the car brand and model. Some require less time to replace the ignition cylinder while others need more labor effort.
Replacing an ignition lock with a new one can cost you $350 to $500. The cost of a parts depends on if it is mechanical or electric and the options that come with it. Certain parts which are not very common tend to be more expensive, while common vehicle parts such as Honda/Ford/Gmc/Toyota will usually be more affordable than other car brands.
A worn-out key will often cause damage to your ignition cylinder. This happens because your worn-out key has moving space inside your ignition that allows it to scrape against sensitive parts and wear them down quickly. How do you know when a car key is worn out? It is very simple - the grooves or cuts of a functioning key should look "sharp" ,with time those grooves will lose their sharpness and get rounded because of friction.
When you notice that your car key is becoming round and losses its shape, it is probably time to replace the key with a new one. On the picture below you can see a "fresh cut" key on the right and a worn out key on the left, try to notice the differences, the cuts on the right key looks sharper, this is how your key suppose to look like.
A heavy key chain can also be the cause of a faulty ignition lock cylinder. We recommend to avoid putting excess weight on your key chain because it affects your ignition cylinder's inner parts. When the key is inside the ignition cylinder, it has room to move and doesn't stay in one position while you drive your car. That means that with every bump and every turn, the key is slightly moving inside the ignition and it wears it out.
With every extra key on your key chain the weight add up and it pulls downward on the ignition cylinder even more which wears out the interior parts of the ignition quicker. With time, the inner parts will wear out completely and then you will start experiencing problems such as having difficulty pulling the key out or having a hard time turning the ignition cylinder on. The recommended amount of keys to have on your keychain is between 4 to 8 keys, we recommend to stay in that range.
